Screen Shot 2018-05-16 at 2.37.56 PMSteph Harvey is a leader in the literacy professional development field.  Spending more than forty years in education, Harvey’s passion comes from her experiences as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, professional developer, consultant, and author.

More than likely, you are familiar with Harvey’s work but may not even know it. A few of her best-known works are the Comprehension Toolkit series and Strategies That Work: Teaching Comprehension for Understanding and Engagement both of which she co-authored with Anne Goudvis.  More recently, she and Harvey “Smokey” Daniels explored how tapping in to kids’ natural curiosity plays a powerful role in reaching all students through inquiry and technology in their book Comprehension & Collaboration, Revised Edition.  This is a perfect resource to guide the first few weeks of your school year where there is a focus on laying the foundation of learning for your classroom.

Harvey’s newest resource, FROM STRIVING TO THRIVING: How to Grow Confident, Capable Readers (Harvey and Ward), explains how to use detailed formative assessments to drive responsive instruction for your students who need the extra support to fully thrive in reading.

Summer Institute is privileged to have Steph Harvey lead sessions on Thursday, June 21st where she will share her expertise in literacy.  Be ready to take back lots of practical tips and tricks for reaching the most challenging of readers.

If you are looking to expand your literacy “toolbox”, then Harvey is a must see! Described by a colleague as “a gregarious, inquisitive, compassionate woman with boundless energy and a story for every occasion”, she is sure to bring any concept to life.
